This week marks the 16th World Green Building Week. The initiative was launched by the World Green Building Council and is the worlds largest campaign to accelerate sustainable built environments globally.
For World Green Building Week 2025, the theme “Business goes better when you’re bold on buildings” highlights how sustainable buildings deliver concrete value and resilience for businesses.
So why is it important to consider the built environment in relation to sustainable business practices? According to the Global Status Report for Buildings and construction, developed by UNEP’s GlobalABC, the built environment sector accounts for 34% of global CO2 emissions. Additionally, the sector is responsible for consuming 32% of global energy. See Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction 2024/2025: Not just another brick in the wall | GlobalABC
We are fortunate that our HQ is located in Senan House, Ireland’s first commercial Passive House building. Beyond the obvious financial returns (reduced bills etc), our occupant well-being is enhanced through continuous mechanical ventilation (MVHR), which filters pollutants and maintains CO₂ levels below 1,000 ppm. This is said to be directly linked to reduced absenteeism and heightened productivity in workplaces. Thermal stability further enhances comfort, with buildings sustaining temperatures between 20–25°C year-round, even during Ireland’s unpredictable weather.
During the week ahead we will be posting to draw attention to some of the benefits of addressing your buildings CO2 emissions.
Here are some of our findings:
1. Cost and Profit Advantages
Companies with high-performing buildings have reduced utility bills and lower operational costs, with energy intensity cut by up to 38%.
2. Workforce Wellbeing and Productivity
Green buildings measurably boost health and performance; cognitive ability can improve by over 25%, and sickness rates fall by 20-30%. WEF_Transforming_Energy_Demand_2024.pdf Workplaces designed for wellness can attract and retain talent enhancing morale.
3. Risk Reduction and Future-Proofing
Bold building choices make companies more resilient against climate risks and natural catastrophes, which are costing the global economy over $100 billion each year.
Sustainable buildings are future-proofed against evolving regulations and climate obligations.
4. Asset Value and Branding
Certified green buildings (such as LEED/BREEAM) increase property values and attract premium tenants.
Strong sustainability credentials boost brand reputation and support investor attraction.
5. Community and Ecosystem Benefits
Green buildings foster stronger local communities with better air quality, lower emissions, and healthier living environments.
They support job creation and drive circular, low-carbon economies.
